Kelly started her career in 1982 with the BOCES program under the tutelage of Tony Costa/John Mongeon Sr. Her dad, Wayne Cleveland, and granddad, Harry Cleveland, were both blacksmiths. It wasn’t long before she was working in the Saratoga backstretch, grooming horses for Laura Derrick. She has worked also at The Meadowlands. Kelly has been at Saratoga over 25 years. Kelly gives recognition to her partner Robert Leslie and her children with help in racing the horses. She also gives appreciation to her owners that have been with her through thick and thin, Larry Hayes and Mike McAllister.
Among her favorites are Timbo Timbo, $4000-$6000 Claiming Pacer of the Year, and Shannon Customer. The favorites horses she has driven were Scoot Recruit and Andrew Storm. Kelly states: “the only things I have time for away from the barn are my children and grand daughter. Kelly was awarded Horsewoman of the Year in 2002 and 2008.
