George Merton was born in the shadow of Hinsdale Raceway and began working there as a groom in the late 60s while still a teenager. He got his license to drive in 1969, scoring his first win behind Johnny W Creed at Hinsdale. George traveled the New England Circuit for several years, landing at Saratoga in 1978 and working for John Kane before training on his own.
George’s memorable horses include Crazy Carrie, Getting Cuckoo, Know Stones, Magnetized, Mellow, Mystical Seaport—2004 Claiming Pacer of The Year ($12,000-$15,000 class), Mystical Wizzard, Twinkies Star, Torpedolovinshadow and Whitey’s Star.George and wife, Sheila, have two daughters.
