Brian Mattison came from a harness racing family with plenty of role models, especially his older brothers Jimmy and Gerry, as well as his cousin Bruce Mattison. Additional horsemen cousins include Kim Crawford as well as distant cousins Brian and John Cross. When Brian graduated high school, he went to work for his brother Jimmy . In 1985, Brian’s first pari-mutuel drive ever, he finish ed second at Saratoga with a horse he owned named Top Chef. In his second lifetime drive, also at Saratoga , he won with Top Chef . From 1984 through 1996 at Pompano Park, Brian advanced to being second trainer for his brother’s stable.

Brian started at Saratoga in 1996 with Chick Harter and started acquiring more drives. One of those drives was the pacer Dice Table, who was voted the 1997 Claiming Pacer of the Year ($4,000+). Brian won the Johnny Page Award for “Up-and-Coming” Driver in 1997 . Brian won the 1999 Aged Pacer of the Year Award with Wahoo Watta Bug. Brian finished in the top 20 trainer-driver standings in 2003 thru 2012, mainly driving for the Paul Kelly Stable.
